Knowledge Retrieval (KR) is a discipline which help people find knowledge that they need from knowledge sources (e.g. data, information, and knowledge bases) through searching, browsing, navigation and exploration.

It emphasize on helping people get relevant knowledge from the knowledge level (compared to data retrieval in the data level and information retrieval in the information level) through a knowledgeable way. That is to help people retrieve and organize knowledge in ways that are consistent to how human minds do.

A structured organization of retrieved knowledge is one of the key characteristics. As a discipline that starts from both the human and machine perspectives, KR draws results from many related disciplines, such as Epistemology (Theory of knowledge), Knowledge Management, Cognitive psychology, Cognitive neuroscience, Logic and Inference, Machine learning and Knowledge discovery, Linguistics, Information technology, etc.
